Whiplash is the common name given to the injury where there is a hyper extension (increased backward motion) and hyperflexion (increased forward motion) of the cervical (neck) spine. More simply put, the head is dramatically thrust forward and backward. Car accidents and falls can cause whiplash injuries. Symptoms of whiplash include: decreased or restricted range of motion in the neck, pain or stiffness of the neck when moving your head, tenderness, headaches, and shoulder, neck, or arm pain. Whiplash symptoms may, or may not, be felt immediately; it is common for symptoms to take several hours, days, and in some cases even months or years following an accident.
The most common treatment for whiplash is spinal manipulation or muscle relaxation and/or stimulation. Even if you are not in pain following an incident, it is important to receive prompt attention to your injury. We can adjust your neck and/or spine so it is able to heal properly. In addition to Chiropractic adjustments, we can recommend physical therapy, such as stretching and strengthening exercises, to aid in your recovery.
