The Kinesio Taping Method is a rehabilitative taping technique founded in 1973 to treat pain.  Kinesio tape is designed to not restrict the body’s range of motion, while providing support and stability to the joints and muscles. This method is designed to help reduce the buildup of fluids within the layers of soft tissue (commonly known as edema), resulting in decreasing the temperature of inflamed tissue.

What to Expect

This tape assists in decreasing pain, reducing inflammation, improving lymphatic flow, assisting in muscle function, improving joint function and neuromuscular reeducation.

What to do BEFORE getting Kinesio Taped

Before coming in for treatment, patients should be sure that the skin in the treatment area is free from oils, perfumes and moisturizers. If there is excessive hair on the affected area, this may also limit adhesion and require shaving.

What to know AFTER getting Kinesio Taped

Kinesio Tape can be worn consecutively for 3-5 days. The tape’s adhesive is heat-activated, so it’s recommend you avoid using heat packs or hair dryers in the area, as this will cause the tape to become more difficult to remove. After application, trim frayed tape edges carefully to prevent further fraying.

Can you apply Kinesio Tape yourself?

Yes!  At SOS Chiropractic, our doctors recommend that you ask questions and try to replicate how he applies the tape to your treatment area. This tape is great DIY care, but it must be done correctly to be effective. We have 3 rules of thumb to remember:

  1. Don’t overstretch the tape, overstretching the tape reduces its effectiveness.
  2. If the tape causes your complaint to get worse, remove the tape. If your pain is worse after application, it is most likely due to incorrect application.
  3. Rub the tape to activate the adhesive.
