Causes & Symptoms

The neck, or cervical spine, provides support and mobility for your head, which can weigh about 11 pounds.  While neck pain is less common than lower back pain, millions of Americans experience it at some point in their life.

Neck pain can be caused by:

  • Cradling your phone between your shoulder and neck
  • Whiplash
  • Carrying a heavy backpack or purse
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Stress
  • Herniated disk
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Poor posture
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sleeping position
  • Accidents or falls

Symptoms associated with neck pain:

  • Difficulty turning the head
  • Sharp or stabbing pain
  • Soreness or tenderness
  • Pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that radiates down into the shoulders, arms or fingers
  • Pain that radiates up into the head
  • Trouble with gripping or lifting objects
  • General soreness
  • Headaches

Treatments

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to neck pain treatment. Our doctors will do a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and possible causes to determine treatment options.  The most common treatment for neck pain is spinal manipulation or muscle relaxation and/or stimulation.  In addition to Chiropractic adjustments, we can recommend physical therapy, such as stretching and strengthening exercises, to aid in your recovery.
