Causes & Symptoms

Whiplash is the common name given to the injury where there is a hyperextension (increased backward motion) and hyperflexion (increased forward motion) of the cervical (neck) spine. More simply put, the head is dramatically thrust forward and backward. Car accidents and falls can cause whiplash injuries.  Whiplash symptoms may, or may not, be felt immediately; it is common for symptoms to take several hours, days, and in some cases even months or years following an accident.

Symptoms of whiplash include

  • Decreased or restricted range of motion in the neck
  • Pain or stiffness of the neck when moving your head
  • Tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder, neck, or arm pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Lower back pain

Treatments

The most common treatment for whiplash is spinal manipulation or muscle relaxation and/or stimulation.  Even if you are not in pain following an incident, it is important to receive prompt attention to your injury. We can adjust your neck and/or spine so it is able to heal properly. In addition to Chiropractic adjustments, we can recommend physical therapy, such as stretching and strengthening exercises, Laser Therapy, Myofascial Release and Neuromuscular Reeducation (NMR) to aid in your recovery.
