Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) or electrotherapy, uses a device to deliver electric impulses through electrodes on the skin, to stimulate the the muscles. EMS is used help increase blood flow to the injured area, reduce pain and improve healing. Our doctors place pads that adhere to the skin on, or around, the injured area or muscle group. These pads send electrical pulses to the injured area and cause contractions.
What to expect
The electric impulses are made to mimic the central nervous system. Although electrotherapy is not painful, you will feel a tingling sensation during treatments as your muscles contract and release. EMS treatments usually take 10-20 minutes.
